Open AI just announced Sora...

Published 3 months ago • 4 min read

Good evening Reader,

In the past year we have seen massive changes in the world of Artificial Intelligence.

And while people who are monitoring and keeping up to date notice these changes, it may pass a lot of the world by.

Except for when something big happens and it feels like a true milestone has been reached.

For example, the launch of ChatGPT or when Midjourney went from v3 to v4, the world paused for a moment to see if robots were coming to our doorsteps.

However, while LLM's & text to image were making big waves, we haven't quite seen that big of a leap in text to video.

Some tools such as Runway, Pika, & Kaiber had been doing some interesting work with the most noticeable recent update coming from Runway releasing their multi-brush tool.

But last night may have come one of the greatest milestones in AI development since ChatGPT.

Open AI just made the leap in text to video a lot of people have been waiting for...

The announcement:

Open AI's Statement:

WOW...

Did you read that 𝕏 post & statement correctly?

"Sora can create videos of up to 60 seconds featuring highly detailed scenes, complex camera motion, and multiple characters with vibrant emotions."

Okay, okay, let's calm down.

Can the quality be THAT GOOD?

60 seconds? One whole minute? We are barely past 4 second generations without extending!

Well, you'll be thankful they released multiple examples with prompts.

Let's check some out below....

Prompt: The camera follows behind a white vintage SUV with a black roof rack as it speeds up a steep dirt road surrounded by pine trees on a steep mountain slope, dust kicks up from it’s tires, the sunlight shines on the SUV as it speeds along the dirt road, casting a warm glow over the scene. The dirt road curves gently into the distance, with no other cars or vehicles in sight. The trees on either side of the road are redwoods, with patches of greenery scattered throughout. The car is seen from the rear following the curve with ease, making it seem as if it is on a rugged drive through the rugged terrain. The dirt road itself is surrounded by steep hills and mountains, with a clear blue sky above with wispy clouds.

Prompt: A movie trailer featuring the adventures of the 30 year old space man wearing a red wool knitted motorcycle helmet, blue sky, salt desert, cinematic style, shot on 35mm film, vivid colors.

video preview

Prompt: Several giant wooly mammoths approach treading through a snowy meadow, their long wooly fur lightly blows in the wind as they walk, snow covered trees and dramatic snow capped mountains in the distance, mid afternoon light with wispy clouds and a sun high in the distance creates a warm glow, the low camera view is stunning capturing the large furry mammal with beautiful photography, depth of field.

video preview

Prompt: Photorealistic closeup video of two pirate ships battling each other as they sail inside a cup of coffee.

video preview

Prompt: Drone view of waves crashing against the rugged cliffs along Big Sur’s garay point beach. The crashing blue waters create white-tipped waves, while the golden light of the setting sun illuminates the rocky shore. A small island with a lighthouse sits in the distance, and green shrubbery covers the cliff’s edge. The steep drop from the road down to the beach is a dramatic feat, with the cliff’s edges jutting out over the sea. This is a view that captures the raw beauty of the coast and the rugged landscape of the Pacific Coast Highway.

If you want to see the rest of the video examples they released, you can head over to Open AI.

As stated at the beginning of the newsletter, this feels like a huge step.

But when will WE get access?

Open AI explained when this will be available to use:

So if you would like to see me in with a chance of showing you guys what Sora can do, please keep supporting me!

It has meant the world to me so far and I am grateful for every single one of you :)

Now I know I am excited, and I hope you all are too, but let's keep a balanced head here. Nothing is perfect and Sora will have it's limitations: (despite seemingly crushing all competition!)

In addition, in a world where deep fakes has started to run rife, the wider population may be concerned with how this affects things.

For example, if we cannot tell the difference between fake and real, how can we deal with the misinformation that could release havoc on our world? What's to stop someone using my identity?

And while it is early days for Sora, Open AI released this statement:

This is good to hear.

They didn't just release Sora into the general public. They are being cautious about the approach and want it to have the right effects on the world. Not to cause havoc which some AI tools already have already done such as deepfake and voice cloning.

If Sora lives up to all it is cracked up to be we are going to see a major shift in 2024 as many predicted. In other parts of the online world the Bitcoin halving is approaching and many alt coins have started to adopt artificial intelligence predicting the rampage it could potentially have this year.

Sora could wipe out it's competition and monopolize the text to video market. I would like to say I do not think this would be a good thing. But I am excited the about barriers falling for people who don't have a voice.

One company controlling the narrative is not the way forward, but what Sora have showcased in the past 24 hours is nothing short of remarkable.

We could have fan made films created by then tens of thousands this year.

We could see the way content is produced shift dramatically.

In addition, we could also see the pendulum shift back towards human connection.

As much as AI is here to help us move forward and make technological advancements in this world, we as humans will crave human connection.

This will not be the end of humanity.

I could not have built what I have built without human connection.

We must find the balance so we as humans can utilise AI to our advantage and reap it's benefits.

I am very excited for the release of Sora and have been for a lot of AI developments in the past year.

Me and my business partner Thomas Haynes are looking forward to creating some more films for you all to enjoy :)

Thank you all for reading this newsletter.

What will you use Sora for, and what impact do you think it will have in 2024?

Feel free to reply and let me know!

P.S... Me and my panel on 𝕏 spaces go live in an hour (17:00 EST) to discuss Sora! You can come and join us by clicking the link below: Generative AI Weekly Spaces

No worries if you cannot join as it will be recorded and you can use the same link to listen to the recording!

Hello Reader, Meta, (formerly Facebook), has been a big player in the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) within the tech industry. And before we dive into their recent advances, let's take a quick look at how they've been a leading player in AI. Meta's journey into AI began as a quest to enhance user interactions and streamline content delivery across all of its platforms. It started in 2013 when Meta established its AI Research Lab (FAIR). One of the earliest applications of AI at...
